China’s electric vehicle market just crowned a new heavyweight champion — and it’s fully electric.
Nio’s third-generation ES8 SUV has officially become the best-selling large SUV in China, after delivering a stunning 22,258 vehicles in December alone, according to data released by the company this week. The performance places the ES8 ahead of every other large SUV on sale in the country, regardless of whether they are gasoline, hybrid or fully electric.
For Nio, it marks a major milestone — and a sign that luxury electric family SUVs are moving firmly into the mainstream.
A Breakout Moment for Electric Three-Row SUVs
Nio founder and CEO William Li confirmed that the ES8 didn’t just lead its segment — it dominated across all price and powertrain categories, making it China’s most popular large SUV overall in December.
Nio described the moment as the beginning of the “golden age” of pure-electric, three-row SUVs — a category once seen as niche, but now growing rapidly as families transition to electric vehicles.
The ES8 is available in both six-seat and seven-seat configurations, positioning it as a premium family hauler with full-size capability.
A High-End Electric Flagship
Launched in September 2025, the third-generation ES8 represents Nio’s most expensive and technologically advanced SUV to date.
The vehicle starts at 406,800 yuan (around $57,700 USD) including the battery pack — placing it among the highest-priced domestically produced vehicles in China.
Despite the premium pricing, demand has surged. By December 29, Nio confirmed the ES8 had already crossed 40,000 total deliveries, hitting its full-year production target ahead of schedule.
December Sales Powered Nearly Half of Nio’s Deliveries
The ES8’s success didn’t just lift its own name — it carried the brand.
Of Nio’s total December deliveries, nearly 46% came from ES8 sales alone, underlining how central the model has become to the company’s growth strategy.
It also topped sales charts among:
- Large three-row SUVs
- Vehicles priced above 400,000 yuan
- Premium domestically built models
EV Market Still Dominated by Tesla and BYD
While the ES8 ruled its segment, the broader passenger vehicle market remains fiercely competitive.
Tesla’s Model Y continued to lead China in total vehicle sales in December, followed closely by BYD’s Song and BYD Seagull. Still, Nio’s ES8 placed within the top 25 best-selling vehicles in the country overall — an impressive result for a high-end luxury electric SUV.
Why the ES8 Is Winning Buyers
Industry analysts point to three major reasons behind the ES8’s breakout performance:
• Premium design and luxury interior
• Strong electric performance and smooth driving experience
• Spacious three-row layout appealing to modern Chinese families
With charging infrastructure expanding rapidly across China, high-end electric SUVs are becoming practical replacements for traditional gasoline family vehicles.
What This Means for the EV Industry
The ES8’s surge signals a broader shift in China’s auto market — one where electric vehicles are no longer limited to compact city cars, but are now dominating full-size family and luxury segments.
For Nio, it represents its strongest competitive position yet against Tesla, BYD and emerging domestic rivals.
And for the global EV market, it’s another clear sign: the future of large SUVs is electric.
